Animus Redux
Animus Redux

In the night, once more, you come
And, as easily as the moment, my head rests on your shoulder
Friends fall away beyond the curve of your cheek
Along speeding silver rails that dazzle in the afternoon sun
I cannot call them back
My throat is too full with the sudden flight of birds
With the warm surround of a rising tide
Sunlight embraces the bowl of oranges, the clouded mirror
The brightly woven cloths faded to soft jewels
The wood floor gleaming with a lifetime of bare footsteps
How long has it been?
Your face is turned away
I cannot see, but know that I will know it
A thousand years from now
You rise to leave on an errand of promise
Your palm kisses my hair--tender, unhesitating
But I know that you will not return
That all you leave behind
Is a wisp of dream and a notion
That each thing mirrors the other
And the membrane that separates
Drifted cloud from woven leaf
Shimmering stream from embedded stone
Is gossamer that imprisons as it sustains
The purple blood surging through byways of flesh
Is cousin to the maze of gold
Threading the rocky heart of the mountain
And just a shout, just a whisper
Might tear asunder that fearful gauze
And, in one blazing instant
Spill light into dark, fire into rain, and us into forever
